In recent months, I have had the opportunity to partner with three distinct educational institutions.  Boston University, with over 30,000 students, is a prestigious research university and a member of the esteemed Association of American Universities.  Rollins College is the oldest college in Florida and committed to the values and ideals of a liberal arts education.  CCAE, one of the oldest adult learning centers in the country, was founded in 1870 to promote culture and brotherhood following the devastation of the Civil War.  While they differ in size, scale, and scope, each institution is committed to the advancement of learning and discovery and serving a wide array of students.

Last fall, I completed two staff attorney searches for Health Law Advocates’ Mental Health Advocacy Program for Kids initiative. Since the program’s founding, attorneys have successfully helped children with unmet mental health needs avoid the juvenile justice system by connecting them with mental health services. Their efforts have had a positive and profound impact on the lives of the children and families they serve.

Cambridge Center for Adult Education

The Cambridge Center for Adult Education (CCAE), founded in 1870, is one of the oldest adult learning centers in the country. Each year, CCAE offers more than 2,000 classes to approximately 12,000 students. The center retained SSP to recruit a director of development (DOD) who will broaden and strengthen the center’s current outreach efforts and provide philanthropic support that is sustainable and impactful. The DOD will have the opportunity to partner with Linda Burton, a visionary executive director, and engage a committed board of directors in fundraising efforts.

SSP partnered again with Health Law Advocates (HLA) to recruit two staff attorneys for the organization’s Mental Health Advocacy Program for Kids (MHAP for Kids) initiative. MHAP for Kids attorneys work out of family resource centers across Massachusetts and advocate for children in school, court, and mental health systems to ensure that their mental health needs are met, and their legal rights are protected. Matt Selig, executive director, and Marisol Garcia, deputy director, of HLA selected Stephanie Ozahowski and Amanda Stutman to serve in these critically important roles. Ozahowski will serve children primarily in Essex County while Stutman will operate from the Gandara Family Resource Center in Springfield and serve children in Hampden County.

Last summer, SSP had an opportunity to assist Liz Vago, founder of Liz Vago Talent Strategy and Recruitment, in her search for an associate dean for career and professional development at Brooklyn Law School. Heather Spielmaker was selected for the role from a competitive pool of candidates. She started her position in November 2023.

Spielmaker began her career in law school administration in 2005 and previously led pro bono and professional development programming before leading career services offices in West Virginia, Kansas, and Arizona. She is a member of the National Association of Law Placement (NALP) ABA Employment Protocols Advisory Committee and co-chair of the NALP Experienced Professionals section. As a first-generation college graduate and non-traditional student who completed law school as a single, working mother, Spielmaker strives to deliver career support that will advance students wherever they are in their academic and professional journeys.
